crosshatching

Intersecting line technique

Crosshatching is a shading technique using sets of parallel lines that cross each other at angles to create depth, texture, or tonal variation.

Artists and illustrators use it in drawing, engraving, and printmaking—the closer the lines, the darker the area appears: The etching used fine crosshatching to suggest shadow.

The verb is crosshatch.
