duomo

Grand Italian church

A duomo is an Italian cathedral, specifically the principal church of a city.

The term appears in English primarily when discussing Italian architecture and tourism: We climbed to the top of the duomo in Florence, The duomo dominates the Milanese skyline.

The word retains its Italian flavor and is rarely used for cathedrals outside Italy.
