aisle

Path between rows

An aisle is a passage between rows of seats or shelves—in theaters, airplanes, churches, supermarkets.

The phrase walk down the aisle means to get married, from the church aisle a bride traditionally walks.

In legislatures, across the aisle refers to cooperation between opposing parties, who sit on opposite sides: reaching across the aisle.
