spires
Sky-piercing towers
Spires are tall, tapering structures that rise to a point, most commonly seen atop churches and cathedrals where they draw the eye heavenward.
The word extends to any similar pointed projection, whether on a building or in nature: mountain spires rose through the mist.
Figuratively, spires suggest aspiration and reaching upward.
As a verb, spire means to rise or shoot up in a tapering form, though this use is uncommon.
