A marketplace is a location where goods are bought and sold—originally an open square or covered area where vendors gathered: the central marketplace of the old town.
The meaning extends to any arena of commercial activity: the global marketplace, the marketplace of ideas.
In contemporary usage, marketplace often refers to online platforms connecting buyers and sellers: She listed the couch on a Facebook marketplace.
