gargoyle

Cathedral's stone grotesque

A gargoyle is a carved stone figure, typically grotesque or monstrous, projecting from a building's roofline to channel rainwater away from the walls.

The term extends to any grotesque carved figure on a building, even decorative ones without drainage function.

By extension, gargoyle describes an ugly person: He sat in the corner like a gargoyle.
