conning tower

Periscope housing structure

A conning tower is the raised structure on a submarine or warship from which navigation and combat operations are directed.

On submarines, it houses the periscope and provides access to the bridge when surfaced.

The term comes from "con," meaning to direct the steering of a vessel: The captain climbed into the conning tower to survey the horizon.
