depth charge

Underwater explosive device

A depth charge is an explosive device designed to detonate underwater at a preset depth, used primarily against submarines.

The weapon is dropped from ships or aircraft and sinks until water pressure triggers detonation, destroying or damaging submerged vessels nearby: The destroyer dropped depth charges on the suspected submarine position.
