casemate

Fortified artillery room

A casemate is a fortified chamber in a defensive wall or rampart, typically with openings for artillery.

The enclosed space protects soldiers and guns from enemy fire while allowing them to shoot outward.

In naval architecture, casemates are armored compartments housing guns on warships: The battleship's casemate guns provided secondary armament.
