circumnavigate

Go completely around

To circumnavigate is to travel completely around something, especially by water: Magellan's expedition was the first to circumnavigate the globe.

The word applies to any complete circuit—sailing around an island, flying around the world, or walking around a lake.

Figuratively, to circumnavigate an obstacle is to find a way around it: She circumnavigated the bureaucracy by going straight to the director.
