dateline

Story origin marker

A dateline is the line at the beginning of a news article giving the place and sometimes the date of origin: MOSCOW — Russian officials announced today... .

The dateline establishes where a reporter filed the story, lending geographic credibility to the account.

As a verb, to dateline is to mark with such a line: The dispatch was datelined from Kabul.

Separately, the International Date Line is the imaginary line in the Pacific where the calendar date changes.
