bypass
Route avoiding downtown
Bypass means to go around rather than through.
A bypass road routes traffic around a congested area rather than through it.
In medicine, a bypass is a surgical procedure that creates an alternative passage for blood flow: coronary bypass surgery.
To bypass something is to circumvent or avoid it entirely: She bypassed the usual channels and went straight to the director.
The word implies finding a way around an obstacle, whether physical, procedural, or technological: bypass the security system.
