chronometer
Ship captain's watch
A chronometer is a precision timepiece designed for exceptional accuracy, especially one used for navigation at sea.
Determining longitude required knowing the exact time at a reference point, so marine chronometers were built to withstand motion and temperature changes.
The term now applies to any highly accurate clock or watch: The observatory's chronometer lost only two seconds per year.
