explorer
Seeker of unknowns
An explorer is a person who travels to unfamiliar regions to discover what's there—historically mapping unknown territories, now often investigating remote or extreme environments: Arctic explorers, cave explorers.
The word extends to anyone who investigates the unfamiliar: an explorer of ideas, urban explorers who document abandoned buildings.
Explorer can also name vehicles or tools designed for investigation. (Capitalized Explorer is a Microsoft web browser or a Ford SUV model.)
