skirt

Avoid the edge

A skirt is a garment that hangs from the waist and covers part or all of the legs, traditionally worn by women and girls.

By extension, skirt refers to anything resembling this shape or position—the skirt of a coat, or the skirts of a city (its outer edges).

The verb skirt means to go around the edge of something rather than through it: We skirted the lake on our hike.

To skirt an issue is to avoid addressing it directly.

Skirt is also dated slang, often offensive, for a woman.
