cinematograph

Early movie machine

A cinematograph is an early motion picture camera and projector, or the system of filmmaking itself.

The word was common in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when moving pictures were new: The cinematograph amazed audiences who had never seen photographs move.

Now largely historical, though British English retains cinematography for the art of filming.
