dictaphone

Transcriptionist's audio source

A dictaphone is a device for recording spoken words, typically used by professionals to dictate letters, notes, or reports for later transcription.

The term originated as a trademark but became generic for any voice recording device used in office settings: She dictated the memo into her dictaphone.

Now largely replaced by digital recorders and smartphone apps.
