zoetrope

Slotted motion cylinder

A zoetrope is a cylindrical device that creates the illusion of motion.

Images on the inside of a spinning drum are viewed through vertical slits, making sequential pictures appear to move—a precursor to cinema.

The term now applies to any device or art installation using this principle: The animator built a zoetrope to demonstrate persistence of vision.
