newsreels
Theater news footage
Newsreels were short films of current events shown in cinemas before the main feature, a staple of moviegoing from the early 1900s through the 1960s.
They delivered news visually—war footage, political events, sports highlights, human interest stories—often with dramatic narration.
Before television became widespread, newsreels were how most people saw moving images of world events.
My grandmother remembers watching newsreels about World War II at the local theater.
The format became obsolete as TV news took over.
