daguerreotype
Mercury vapor image
A daguerreotype is an early type of photograph made on a silver-coated copper plate, producing a mirror-like image with remarkable detail.
The process, introduced in 1839, required subjects to hold still for extended periods, giving portraits their characteristic stiff formality.
The word now evokes antique photography generally: The old daguerreotype showed her great-great-grandmother in a high-collared dress.
