nickelodeon
Coin-operated music machine
A nickelodeon was an early movie theater charging five cents admission, popular in the United States from roughly 1905 to 1915.
The term also applies to coin-operated player pianos and early jukeboxes—machines that played music for a nickel.
Both senses evoke turn-of-the-century popular entertainment: The old nickelodeon in the corner played ragtime tunes. (Capitalized Nickelodeon is the children's television network.)
