Horizontal camera movement
Panning has several meanings united by sweeping horizontal movement.
In film and photography, to pan is to rotate the camera sideways, following action or surveying a scene: The camera panned across the crowd.
In cooking, panning means cooking in a pan.
In gold prospecting, panning is swirling water and sediment in a shallow pan to separate gold.
To pan something is also to criticize it harshly: Critics panned the film.
In audio, panning shifts sound between left and right channels.
