photographic plate

Early camera's film

A photographic plate is a sheet of glass coated with light-sensitive emulsion, used to capture images before the advent of flexible film.

Plates were the standard medium for photography from the mid-nineteenth century through the early twentieth, and remained in specialized scientific use—particularly astronomy—well after film dominated general photography.

The observatory's archive contains thousands of photographic plates recording a century of star positions.
