silent
Making no noise
Silent means making no sound or refraining from speech.
A silent room has no noise; a silent person says nothing.
Silent can describe things that operate without sound: a silent film, a silent auction.
To remain silent is to withhold comment, often strategically: She remained silent on the allegations.
A silent letter appears in spelling but isn't pronounced: the k in knife.
