cathode rays

Vacuum tube emissions

Cathode rays are streams of electrons emitted from the negative electrode (cathode) in a vacuum tube when electricity passes through it.

Discovered in the late nineteenth century, they were crucial to understanding atomic structure and led to technologies like the cathode ray tube (CRT), which powered television and computer monitors before flat screens: The old TV used a cathode ray tube.
