electron tube
Cathode ray device
An electron tube is a sealed glass or metal container in which electrons flow between electrodes through a vacuum or gas.
Before transistors and semiconductors, electron tubes powered radios, televisions, early computers, and amplifiers.
They're still used in specialized applications—high-end audio equipment, microwave transmission, and guitar amplifiers prized for their warm sound.
Also called vacuum tube or valve (British).
