phosphorescence

Lingering cold light

Phosphorescence is the emission of light without combustion or perceptible heat, especially the glow that persists after the light source is removed.

The term comes from phosphorus, an element that glows in the dark.

Phosphorescent materials absorb light and release it slowly: The phosphorescence of the watch dial faded through the night.

The word also describes the eerie glow of certain sea creatures or decaying organic matter: We watched the phosphorescence of the waves breaking on the beach.
