cathode ray

Tube television beam

A cathode ray is a stream of electrons emitted from the negative electrode (cathode) in a vacuum tube when voltage is applied.

Before the physics was understood, the phenomenon was named for its apparent ray-like behavior.

Cathode ray tubes powered television and computer monitors for decades: the glow of a cathode ray screen.

Now largely obsolete, replaced by flat-panel displays.
