yoke

Beast-binding beam

A yoke is a wooden beam fitted across the necks of two draft animals, binding them together to pull a load.

From this concrete meaning comes the figurative sense of something that binds or burdens: the yoke of oppression, throw off the yoke of colonialism.

A yoke also names the fitted upper part of a garment across the shoulders or hips.

To yoke is to harness animals together, or to join things in general: yoked in marriage, yoked to a tedious job.

A yoke of oxen is a pair.
