X-rays
Penetrating medical images
X-rays are high-energy electromagnetic waves used primarily in medical imaging and security scanning.
They penetrate soft tissue while being absorbed by bone and metal, producing shadow images that reveal internal structures: X-rays confirmed the tumor had not spread.
The term doubles as both the radiation and the resulting images.
As a verb, to X-ray means to examine with this technology. (Lowercase x-rays is the same word in mid-sentence.)
