electron-volt

Tiny energy measure

An electron-volt is a unit of energy used in atomic and particle physics, equal to the energy gained by an electron when accelerated through an electric potential difference of one volt.

It's a tiny amount—about 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ joules—but convenient for measuring subatomic phenomena.

Abbreviated eV, with prefixes for larger scales: keV (thousand), MeV (million), GeV (billion).
