aether

Obsolete space-filler

Aether is an archaic or poetic spelling of ether.

In classical and medieval thought, aether was the pure, luminous substance filling the upper regions of space beyond the terrestrial sphere—the fifth element, distinct from earth, air, fire, and water.

Nineteenth-century physics proposed a luminiferous aether as the medium through which light waves traveled, a concept abandoned after experiments failed to detect it.

The spelling persists in fantasy and science fiction to evoke cosmic or mystical qualities: The ship sailed through the aether between worlds.
