Michael Faraday
Michael Faraday was a nineteenth-century English scientist whose experiments with electricity and magnetism laid the groundwork for electric motors, generators, and transformers.
Largely self-taught, he discovered electromagnetic induction and established the concept of magnetic fields.
His name survives in the farad, a unit of electrical capacitance, and the Faraday cage, a metal enclosure that blocks electromagnetic fields.
