loan

Bank credit arrangement

A loan is something lent, typically money given with the expectation of repayment: She took out a loan to buy the house.

Banks make loans; friends loan each other books and tools.

The verb loan is interchangeable with lend in American English, though some consider lend more formal.

On loan means temporarily borrowed: The painting is on loan from a private collection.
