commute

Work trip routine

Commute has two main branches.

The familiar one is traveling regularly between home and work: My commute takes forty minutes each way.

The noun and verb share this sense.

The other branch involves substitution or exchange—to commute a prison sentence is to replace it with a lighter one: The governor commuted her death sentence to life imprisonment.

In electronics, to commute is to reverse current direction.
