block and tackle

Rope-and-wheels lifter

A block and tackle is a system of pulleys and rope used to lift or move heavy loads.

The rope threads through two or more pulley blocks, multiplying the pulling force: They rigged a block and tackle to hoist the engine out of the boat.

Essential equipment in sailing, construction, and theatrical rigging.
