sheave

Cable guide wheel

A sheave is a grooved wheel or pulley, typically mounted in a block, over which a rope or cable runs.

The groove keeps the line from slipping off.

Sheaves appear in sailing rigging, crane systems, and anywhere mechanical advantage is needed: The rope ran through a sheave at the top of the mast.
