reeving

Passing through pulleys

Reeving is threading rope or cable through a block, ring, or opening—the fundamental operation of rigging.

Sailors reeve lines through pulleys to create mechanical advantage.

The term extends to any situation requiring rope to be passed through confined spaces: She spent the morning reeving new halyards through the mast.

Past tense: rove or reeved.
