davit

Shipboard lifting apparatus

A davit is a small crane on a ship, typically one of a pair used to lower and raise lifeboats.

The curved arms extend over the side of the vessel, with pulleys and ropes that allow boats to be swung out and lowered to the water: The crew prepared to lower the lifeboat from its davits.

Similar devices appear on docks and oil platforms for handling small boats or equipment.
