marlinspike

Sailor's splicing tool

A marlinspike is a pointed metal tool used in rope work, especially aboard ships.

Sailors use it to separate strands of rope when splicing, to untie tight knots, or to work with heavy line that resists manipulation by hand.

The tool tapers to a point and may be straight or slightly curved: He worked the marlinspike into the knot until it loosened.
