An axle is a rod or shaft on which wheels rotate.
In vehicles, axles connect opposite wheels and transmit power from the engine to the road: The rear axle needs replacing.
The word extends to any central shaft around which something turns.
To wrap around the axle is to become excessively tangled in a problem.
