automata
Self-operating machines
Automata is the plural of automaton—self-operating machines or mechanisms designed to follow a predetermined sequence of operations.
The term appears most often in technical contexts: cellular automata in mathematics, finite automata in computer science.
In older usage, automata were mechanical figures that mimicked living creatures: The 18th-century automata could write, draw, and play music.
