Stalingrad

Volga siege city

Stalingrad was the name of a major Soviet city on the Volga River from 1925 to 1961, now called Volgograd.

The Battle of Stalingrad (1942–43) was among World War II's bloodiest engagements, ending in decisive Soviet victory and marking a turning point against Nazi Germany.

The name has become shorthand for catastrophic urban warfare or a battle of attrition where both sides suffer enormously: The budget negotiations turned into a Stalingrad.
