Siege of Leningrad

Starvation encirclement, WWII

The Siege of Leningrad was the German military blockade of the Soviet city of Leningrad (now St.

Petersburg) during World War II, lasting from September 1941 to January 1944—nearly 900 days.

One of history's most devastating sieges, it killed over a million civilians, mostly from starvation.

The siege has become synonymous with wartime suffering and Soviet resistance.
