Peking

Old Chinese capital

Peking is the older English spelling of Beijing, the capital of China.

The spelling reflects an earlier romanization system; Beijing became standard after China adopted pinyin in the late 20th century.

Peking persists in established terms: Peking duck, Peking opera, Pekingese (the dog breed).

In historical contexts, Peking remains appropriate: the Boxer Rebellion in Peking.
