Fukushima

2011 nuclear catastrophe

Fukushima is a prefecture in northeastern Japan, known internationally for the 2011 nuclear disaster.

An earthquake and tsunami caused meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, releasing radioactive material and forcing mass evacuations.

The name now evokes nuclear catastrophe in the way Chernobyl does: Critics warned the aging reactor could become another Fukushima.
