place name
What maps list
A place name is the proper noun that identifies a geographic location—a city, country, river, mountain, neighborhood, or any named feature of the landscape.
Place names often preserve historical, linguistic, or cultural information long after their original meaning has been forgotten; many English speakers don't realize that *-chester* comes from the Latin word for military camp, or that *-burg* meant fortified town.
The place name "Los Angeles" is Spanish for "the angels."
