Volgograd

Renamed Soviet city

Volgograd is a major Russian city on the Volga River, known as Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961.

The Battle of Stalingrad (1942–43) was a turning point of World War II, where Soviet forces defeated the German army at enormous human cost.

The city was renamed after de-Stalinization but remains synonymous with that brutal siege.
