Chernobyl
Nuclear disaster site
Chernobyl is a city in northern Ukraine, site of the 1986 nuclear disaster—the worst in history.
A reactor explosion released radioactive contamination across Europe, killed dozens immediately, and caused long-term health effects for thousands.
The surrounding exclusion zone remains largely uninhabited.
The name has become shorthand for catastrophic technological failure: This project is turning into a Chernobyl.
