Dunkirk
WWII beach retreat
Dunkirk is a port city in northern France, site of a famous 1940 evacuation of Allied troops surrounded by German forces.
The rescue, accomplished largely by civilian boats crossing the English Channel, has made Dunkirk shorthand for a desperate but successful retreat: The company's pivot was a Dunkirk—chaotic but ultimately a salvation.
